What is your Experian score?
CIBIL gets the airtime, but Experian is one of the four RBI-licensed credit bureaus and is the score that many private banks actually pull. Your Experian score and your CIBIL score are usually 20–30 points apart, and understanding why matters when you’re shopping for credit.

What Experian India actually does
Experian India is a subsidiary of Experian PLC (UK) and has held an RBI Credit Information Company licence since 2010. It collects loan, credit-card, and repayment data from every bank and NBFC in India, aggregates it into a credit report, and applies its own scoring model to produce the Experian score.
The input data is essentially the same as CIBIL’s — all lenders report to all four bureaus every 30 days — but the scoring weights and the way negative events decay over time differ across bureaus. That’s why two scores from the same date are rarely identical.
Experian score range and interpretation
| Experian score | Interpretation | Loan-approval outlook |
|---|---|---|
| 780–900 | Excellent | Best rates, high approval odds |
| 750–779 | Very good | Approved at slightly higher rates |
| 700–749 | Good / borderline | Approvals possible with rate premium |
| 650–699 | Fair | Mostly declined at banks; NBFCs possible |
| 300–649 | Weak | Very difficult for unsecured credit |
| NH / -1 | No history | New-to-credit — evaluated on income |
CIBIL vs Experian — why the scores differ
Both bureaus receive the same raw data, but they weight it differently:
• CIBIL weights recent behaviour slightly more heavily than long-term history.
• Experian gives modest credit for a mix of secured and unsecured products even at lower ages.
• A single late payment may drop CIBIL by 40–80 points while dropping Experian by 30–70 points on the same event.
Net effect: on the same file, most people see their Experian score 10–30 points different from their CIBIL score, usually within a band that keeps them in the same overall category. The two scores are correlated but not identical, which is exactly why RBI licences multiple bureaus — to prevent monopoly and to give lenders a second opinion.
Which lenders pull Experian first
Every bank pulls at least one bureau at underwriting and often pulls two or more for large-ticket loans. Which one a bank pulls FIRST depends on its commercial tie-up with the bureau. In practice, Experian is a common primary pull at:
• Some large private banks for pre-approved credit-card offers
• Several digital NBFCs and fintechs for personal loans and BNPL
• Salary-based lenders in the sub-₹5 lakh segment
If you’re rejected on your CIBIL profile, a lender pulling Experian may still approve. This isn’t “bureau shopping” — it’s a legitimate reflection of different scoring models. That said, if your report has genuine issues (defaults, settled loans), all four bureaus will show them.

How to check your Experian score for free
- Go to experian.in and register with your PAN, name, date of birth, and mobile.
- Verify your identity with an OTP and answer 2–4 credit-history questions.
- You receive your Experian score (300–900) and a detailed report showing all your accounts.
- One free full report per calendar year; paid subscriptions offer monthly refreshes.
- Some bank apps (a few private banks and fintechs) also show a free Experian score under the “credit score” section.
How to improve an Experian score specifically
The mechanics are identical to improving a CIBIL score — there is no bureau-specific hack. Payment history and credit-card utilisation dominate the model. Keep utilisation below 30% of limit, pay every EMI on time, avoid clustered applications, and dispute any factually wrong entries via Experian’s dispute portal (which is separate from CIBIL’s).
One practical note: if you’ve fixed a wrong entry on your CIBIL report, remember to also raise the same dispute with Experian. Corrections do not flow automatically across bureaus — you have to raise the dispute with each bureau separately.
