How to apply for a credit card
Applying for a credit card in India is a fully digital process at most major banks. You can go from application to approval within 30 minutes if your KYC is Aadhaar-linked. Here's exactly how to do it.

Before you apply
- Check your CIBIL score - free through the CIBIL website once a year
- Shortlist 1 or 2 cards that match your spending category
- Verify your income meets the card's minimum eligibility
- Keep PAN, Aadhaar, and 3 months' salary slips ready
The digital application journey
- Fill the application on the bank's website with basic details
- Complete Aadhaar-based e-KYC (OTP)
- Upload PAN and one address proof
- Provide employment / income details; some banks pull salary from your account directly
- Get in-principle approval within minutes
- Video KYC or physical KYC verification
- Card is dispatched to your registered address in 5-10 working days
What to check before signing
- Annual fee and how it can be waived
- Reward rate (points/rupee) and where they can be redeemed
- Foreign-currency mark-up (typically 1.99% to 3.5%)
- Fuel surcharge waiver conditions
- Interest rate on unpaid balance (typically 36-48% p.a.)
